Challenging words with L and R
Dark L and vocalic R, are uncommon sounds in most languages, making the pronunciation challenging for most non-native speakers. They are strong and prominent sounds in speech. So, we learn the pronunciation of challenging words that contain both /r/ and /l/
/lr/ combination words
When /r/ and /l/ come next to each other in words, it can be hard to pronounce. These are examples of words with /lr/ in concatenation:
railroad, ballroom, mailroom, already, alright, walrus,
rivalry (rival + ry), cavalry (caval + ry), chivalry, jewelry, revelry
/rl/ combination words
And these are words with /rl/ combination:
barley, Berlin, curling, curl, garlic, girl, world, gnarl, pearl, Carl, snarl, swirl, twirl
These are words that end with “r + ly”:
early, curly, girly, pearly, hurly, utterly, gnarly, fairly, nearly, clearly, dearly merely, yearly, regularly, similarly, singularly, particularly,
These are difficult words to pronounce due to ‘r’ and ‘l’ in proximity:
squirrel, admiral, coral, rural, collateral, bilateral, inaugural
mirror, nearer, clearer (“mirror” rhymes with “nearer” and “clearer”)
