Nasal plosives, lateral plosives
When the plosives /p, t, k, b, d, g/ are followed by the nasal sonorants /n, m/, the plosives are pronounced in the nose. The reason is that the articulation of the nasal starts when the articulation of the plosive consonant is not yet finished. So the stopped air is released in the nasal cavity. An example of nasal aspiration occurs in the phrase "good news." The air is stopped as a /d/, but released as an /n/: “goo’ news.”
Lateral plosives |
The lateral plosive is similar in concept to nasal aspiration in that the air is stopped as a normal /d/, but released as the 'l sound' /l/. In the phrase "good luck," the /d/ links into the /l/, and lateral aspiration occurs; “goo’ luck”. These are more examples:
good night → goo’ night
good news → goo’ news
good morning → goo’ morning
good man → goo’ man
good luck → goo’ luck
good life → goo’ life
